Freedom and care can conflict. We want our folks to have as much daily freedom as they can but we worry about them falling and needing help. Health monitoring companies generate healthy fees to keep people digitally tethered to caregivers. Those monthly fees add up, though, meaning that many people who need such help are unwilling or unable to pay for these services. Technology is coming to the rescue, however, and replacing costly ongoing alert services with systems that utilize wifi networks and automatically call nearby friends, family or neighbors if there is trouble.
Jim Miller, founder of SavvySenior.org, recently profiled a couple of firms that have health monitoring hardware that runs off of wireless and automatically route calls to nearby friends, neighbors, and other caretakers. This set-up may eliminate the need for expensive monthly monitoring fees.
LogicMark has products that directly dial up to four pre-selected numbers as well as 911, and another product that just dials 911. Telemergency is another company that offers medical alert systems for seniors.
Technology is allowing us to all live longer, and live better. Products like this can help us live safer as well.
